How the odds are made
A day counts as white if snow falls on 24 or 25 December. The odds come from 34 winters of Met Office HadUK-Grid observations on a 1 km grid, a wet-bulb rain-or-snow diagnosis, calibration against held-out Christmases and, in the final weeks, three global forecast ensembles. This is an independent model, not an official Met Office forecast. The Met Office's own definition is looser (one snowflake observed falling anywhere in the UK on 25 December), which is why bookmakers' odds look so much shorter.
